USB in safe mode

If you can get to safe mode but not normal windows and need access to the USB Flash drive, follow these steps to get the USB drive to work in safe mode.

Boot to safe mode or safe mode with networking
Go to control panel (This link will open in a different window)
Double-click on Add New Hardware

The USB flash drive should be detected and work now in safe mode. This does not always work but will sometimes.
