Cable/DSL Modem Drops Connection

If your cable/DSL modem drops the internet connection, there is a few things you can try.

  1. Disconnect the power cord to the cable/DSL modem
  2. Disconnect the cable or phone line to the modem
  3. Wait 2 minutes
  4. Plug all cables back in the modem
  5. If the problem still exists, see if the manufacturer has an update for the modem (if it has the capability of an update)
  6. Try the modem on another computer (if you have another system available)
  7. If you have more than two computers in the network, you can try the following
    1. Leave computer A and computer B connected to router but disconnect all other computers
      1. Does the issue go away?
        1. If the issue did go away, either
          1. A computer that is currently disconnected from the router causing the issue or
          2. There is an issue with the router and it cannot handle all of the computers connected.
      2. If the issue still exists
        1. Disconnect computer B and reconnect computer A
        2. Does the issue go away?
          1. If the issue did go away, either
            1. A computer that is currently disconnected from the router causing the issue or
            2. There is an issue with the router and it cannot handle all of the computers connected.
  8. Contact your ISP to see if there is settings on their end or if they can determine if it is a bad modem

Note: If you replaced your cable modem, you will need to contact your internet provider. The modem has to be registered with them for it to work.
