Whenever one wants to run chkdsk on a partition he or she can not run that command.

SYMPTOMS

When one wants to run the Chkdsk command on a partition, he or she gets the following error message

Cannot lock volume for direct access

Cannot open volume for direct access

 

CAUSE

Windows will not allow it to run while you are in Windows. However you can tell it to run the next time you reboot the computer. If it does not give you that opeion may be due to third party virus checker or disk monitor tool.

 

RESOLUTION

The CHKDSK will not run in windows but your next time you restart the system. You have to tell it to run. Click here for instructions on that

If that does not work then try this

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type services.msc
4. Click OK
5. Scroll down to the respective service (i.e. virus checker or the disk monitor tool)
6. Right-click on that particular service
7. Click Properties
8. Change the Startup type to disabled for any 3rd-party applications which might be causing the Chkdsk lock problem
9. Click Apply
10. Click OK
11. Reboot the computer
