Computer will not function correctly after a period of it not being used
Computers do not like to be off for an extended amount of time. They need to be turned on periodically. When a computer has been put in storage, issues may arise.
Below is possible issues that can arise from the system not being powered on periodically. As technology improves, the durability of the computer parts may improve. Because of the constant changes, some or all of this page may or may not apply to the latest equipment.
This is not a full list but a list of common issues.
- Hard drives - The platters can freeze if they are not used periodically. When this happens, the only choice you have is to replace the hard drive. Run diagnostics on the hard drive.
- Power supply - the motor in the power supply can seize and will not allow the system to come on. You will have to replace the power supply if that happens.
- CMOS battery - The battery can drain from not being used. You will need to replace the battery if it doesn't work. Majority of times, the system will come on but not give correct information or have trouble with booting. The battery is not an expensive item to replace.
