DVD is sluggish or doesn't play correctly

Follow the following steps to troubleshoot the issue with the DVD. (some steps may not apply, if so skip to the next step)

  1. Check the Version of your DirectX. Download the latest version if you don't have it. (Latest version is an external link. They may change without my knowledge. If the link is no good. Go to Microsoft.com and do a search for DirectX)
  2. If you haven't got a DVD Player installed, install a DVD player (example: WinDVD, PowerDVD or other players)
  3. Uninstall and reinstall your DVD Player.
  4. Check for updates for your DVD Player.
  5. Run Windows Update
  6. Uninstall your video driver
  7. Boot to normal windows and install your video driver.
  8. If you are still having the issue, see if there is a newer driver for your video card. If there is, repeat steps 6 and 7 and use the newer driver.
  9. Try lowering the sound acceleration in DxDiag (do not turn it off, just decrease it. If you disable or turn it off, you will still have the issue.)
  10. Try limiting MSCONFIG.
  11. Try System Restore.
  12. Make sure the DVD Drive is in DMA mode and not PIO mode.
  13. Make sure the drive is not Indexed.
  14. If you have two CD-ROM drives, try disconnecting the second drive. (both drives may work fine by themselves but have a conflict when connected together)
  15. See if there is a newer bios for your system.
  16. Turn Power management to off or always on.
  17. Turn off Active Desktop.
  18. Use the Software Troubleshooter
