Cannot format Drive C

The reason you cannot format drive C is because it is in use. If you want to format the drive, you will have to boot to a bootable disk and format it using the format command or other utility such as debug, delpart, or gparted.

If you are wanting to format the drive to reinstall, best use delpart or gparted. Both are good. Gparted is easier to use.

BE SURE THERE IS NO UNSAVED DATA ON DRIVE OR YOU WILL LOOSE THE DATA. BACK IT UP FIRST.

To download Gparted and also information on using it, click here.

Couple of things to verify before starting

  1. Any files you do not want to loose is backed up to another location than drive C.

  2. If you are wanting to format the drive to reinstall the operating system, make sure you have the following

    1. Operating system CD

    2. Product key for the operating system

    3. Drivers for the hardware (if you are installing a different operating system than what was on there, make sure the drivers exist before starting. They may not make the drivers for that os)

    4. Program CDs for your programs
