Memory has changed

When you turn the system on, you get the message that the memory has changed. This is an indication of a memory or motherboard issue.

To determine if it is the motherboard or memory, follow these steps.

  1. Try reseating the memory.

  2. If you have another system that uses the same type of memory try that memory in this system. If the problem still exists, then it will be the motherboard. If the problem goes away, then it is the memory.

  3. If you don't have another system or other memory to try, you can try putting the memory in a different slot. (if your system doesn't require all slots to be filled.

  4. If you are still getting memory has changed after trying a different slot, this can indicate that it is the memory but it is not a guarantee. All the memory slots on the motherboard can be bad.

  5. If the message goes away after trying a different slot, then it is the motherboard.

  6. Download the memory diagnostics.

  7. If you have diagnostic software that you can run to test the system, try running the software.

  8. If you don't have the software and unable to pinpoint if it is the memory or motherboard, then I suggest you take the system to a computer shop for them to diagnose or you can try replacing the memory and see if the problem goes away.
