Modem speed

If your system is not connecting at the speed that it should, There can be different possibilities of the cause.

  1. The telephone box that services your area may not support the speed that your trying to achieve. Some boxes only support 28.8 or 33.6 connection.

  2. Can have old phone lines causing the issue.

  3. If you have a splitter on the phone it can slow the connection.

  4. Have other devices attached to the phone line can slow the connection down.

  5. The phone number your dialing can be bad.

  6. The modem can be bad.

  7. Your operating system can have issues.

  8. The phone line can have noise on it (You can have noise on the line and not hear it)

 

To troubleshoot the speed issues

  1. Have the telephone company check the phone lines. Ask them if the telephone box that services your area supports the speed you are trying to get.
  2. If you have a splitter, try the connection without the splitter and/or surge protector.
  3. Disconnect all phones connected to that phone line and try it with just the modem.
  4. Try connecting to a bulletin board and see what the speed is with it. If it connects higher than you been getting, then your internet provider is causing the issue. Use HyperTerminal to connect to the bulletin board.
  5. See if there is another phone number you can dial to connect to your internet provider.
  6. Some internet providers have their own setup and you have to choose a modem in their setup. Make sure it is setup correctly.
  7. Try a different modem if one is available.
  8. Use Modem Troubleshooter to troubleshoot modem.
