System is Slow to Boot or Hangs

Symptom: System hangs and takes forever to get past the BIOS.  It will eventually get past the BIOS but takes several minutes.

Possible Cause: The newer computers allows the system to boot to a USB device. This feature allows you to boot to a USB hard drive or USB CD-ROM device.   If the USB device is not bootable, the system will pause till the boot sequence errors out. Once it errors out it will go to the next boot device. The error time is what hangs the system.

Fix: To see if it is the USB device that is causing the issue, disconnect all USB devices. If you see that the USB device is hanging the system, you will need to do one of the following options to fix the issue...

  1. Boot to the BIOS and see if there is a setting in the BIOS to allow you to boot to a USB device. If there is, turn the feature off. (Each BIOS is different so see the manufacture for the specifics). On some Dell systems, you set the USB Emulation to "No boot" to turn the feature off.
  2. Leave the USB device disconnected during the time the system boots.
  3. Consult the manufacturer to see if they have a solution.
