You have to be careful about the websites that you go to. A website can be infected and infect your system just by visiting it. When you visit a website, the website installs cookies. A cookie could be infected and will infect your system. There is other ways for the website to infect your system as well.

Things you should do to protect yourself

Make sure your anti-virus software is up to date
Make sure your windows is fully up to date
Make sure you have an anti-spyware program installed
Be cautious of anything you download from the site.

Having an anti-virus or anti-spyware program does not guarantee that you won't get an infection. It is only a tool. Just like people that gets the flu shot and then they still get the flu.

Don't think a known safe website to be safe. Companies have been known to get hacked and the hacker installs a virus on their website. It doesn't happen often but can happen.
