Some confuse the difference between a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and a CDRW drive. All three of them are CD-ROM drives. For further information on the picture of the CD-ROM or click here.

When a computer is turned on, it goes through a boot process before going to windows or other boot device (such as a CD-ROM). Click here for an explanation of the boot process.

If the CD-ROM is not detected in windows or will not boot to the CD, Try the following.

  1. Before troubleshooting there is specific questions you need to answer Click here for the questions.

  2. Do you have an ATA PCI card. If you do, the CD-ROM won't be detected in the BIOS because it is attached to the card. That is normal.

  3. Set the BIOS to default and clear NVRAM

  4. Reseat the IDE cables.

  5. For IDE drives, make sure your master is on the end of the cable. The secondary or slave is connected to the middle of the cable.

  6. Reseat the power cables.

  7. Make sure the jumpers are set correctly.

  8. Remove the PCI cards.

  9. If you have a second CD-ROM drive, disconnect it.

  10. Disconnect all hard drives and floppy. If the system works with them disconnected then either the hard drives or the floppy is causing the issue. Try putting them back one at a time till the problem comes back.

  11. If you have another CD-ROM, try that CD-ROM in this system. If you have another system try the CD-ROM in that system.  If it works you know it is not the CD-ROM drive.

  12. Use the Software Troubleshooter.
