shutdown, restart, log off commands 

If you need to know the commands to do the following

  • Shut down

  • Restart

  • Log off

  • Sleep or Hibernate

  • Lock

  • Switch user

Below is the commands (They work for Windows 8 but they should work for other operating systems also)

NOTE: They are case sensitive.

Menu option Command NOTE
Shut down shutdown.exe /s /t 00 all lower case
Restart shutdown.exe /r /t 00 all lower case
Log off shutdown.exe /l all lower case
Sleep or Hibernate rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Mixed upper and lower case
Lock rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation Mixed upper and lower case
Switch user tsdiscon.exe all lower case

I have also created shortcuts. They will work in Windows 7. They should work with Windows 8 as well but since I don't have Windows 8, I can't verify if it will work or not.

Click on the item you want to download (download it to the desktop of your system)

When you create a shortcut for one of the options listed in the table do the following

  1. When you see "Type the location of the item"

   
  1. Type in the command listed in the table above. (For example, for Switch user, you would type tsdiscon.exe here)

   
  1. When you get the name section

   
  1. give it the name listed under menu options (as in the example 2, you would type Switch user)
