Spelling checker files are damaged

Office 2003

This procedure can be found at Microsoft. It is posted here to avoid broken links and lost information.

Might apply to other versions of Microsoft Office.

To repair the spelling checker files, follow these steps(Click the hyperlink for assistance with that step)

  1. Do a search or a find
  2. Search for Msspell3.dll
  3. Look in the folder windows was installed in (usually drive C)
  4. In the results windows do the following
    1. Right-click the file
    2. Click Rename
    3. Type Msspell3.old
    4. Press Enter
   
  • Repeat steps 1 through 4 to rename the MMssp3en.lex file to Mssp3en.old
  • Start Word
  • Open a blank document
  • Type some text
  • Press F7 to check spelling the document
  • Click Yes when you get the following message:

    • "Microsoft Word can't check the spelling or grammar in this document. This feature is not currently install. Would you like to install it now?"
